The daily scrum is my favorite part of our morning routine. It allows everyone in our family to get on the same page and be prepared for what is to come. It also allows us to set the tone for our self-care that day.

The #1 question I get about the daily scrum, though, is what should be included in it.

Why is that the #1 question?

Well, it has to do with the fact that we haven’t thought about having this daily conversation before. I used to take it for granted that just because my husband COULD see my calendar meant that it was a given that we’d abide by how it looked or he’d know when I was overwhelmed. That is rarely the case. It is rarely the case because we all have our own things to be concerned about and it’s easy to miss what is on others’ plates.

So what do you include in the daily scrum?

1. What is on your schedule for the day

You allow everyone the opportunity to go over their daily schedule so you can understand their load for the day. This makes your work visible to everyone who is at the meeting. During this time, they will be able to see for instance that 5 o’clock meeting that might make it difficult for the person who normally makes dinner to do that.

2. Anything related to the sprint goals

Did you complete something on the sprint goals? Did you run into any difficulty? Is there a bottleneck in the sprint that isn’t allowing a goal to be completed? Now is the time to bring it up.

3. Your daily self-care needs

What do you need today? If you need 30 minutes to yourself today this is the time to say it so that you can find time in the schedule when someone else is available to do the daily minutia of running a home (this is especially important when your kids are very young).

And that is what should be covered in the daily scrum.

If you have any questions about how to do this you can get my daily scrum mini-course here! It will also go over tips and tricks for how to manage the daily scrum as far as sharing calendars or setting up new technology. I look forward to seeing you there.
